Treating cat and dog fleas.
It is important to treat your cat and dog regularly for fleas. Fleas
carry tape worms and disease. To help prevent flea infestation treat once
every 4 weeks, with a spot on treatment such as frontline, which you can
obtain from your local vet and some pet shops.Pet shops sell a variety
of different treatments, such as beapher spot on,beapher cat flea spray
Johnsons Flea powders, and Johnson's 4 Fleas tablets. These are just some
of the products available.
VERY IMPORTANT NEVER USE A DOG FLEA TREATMENT ON A CAT AS DOG FLEA TREATMENTS
CAN BE FATAL TO CATS.
Depending on the type of flea treatment used, puppies
and kittens can be treated from 12 weeks of age, some products can be used
from 2/4 weeks of age . Always read the label. If your cat or dog is sick, nursing
or convalescing, please seek advise from your vet before using any flea
treatments.
Symptoms of fleas are the same for cats and dogs.
You will notice your cat or dog scratching around there ears, base of the
tail, and anywhere they can groom, your cat maybe constantly washing herself
and your dog maybe biting at an itchy spot.
How to use a spot on treatment.
Its a good idea to wear gloves. Part the fur at the base of the neck,
between the shoulder blades.Snap of the lid of the treatment tube.Pour
the entire contents of the tube onto the skin,do not just put it on the
fur. There is no need to massage in the treatment.wash hands thourghly.
Dispose safely of the tube .
REMEMBER ONLY USE DOG FLEA TREATMENTS ON DOGS AND CAT FLEA TREATMENTS
ON CATS.
In the event of a dog flea treatment being used on a cat please CONSULT
A VETERINARY SURGEON IMMEDITATELY and take the pack with you if possible.
It is advised to treat your cat and dog every 4 weeks with a good flea
treatment such as frontline to prevent flea infestation.
Keep treated dogs away from cats for 72 hours.Do not allow your cat to
groom the site of application on your dog .Treated dogs must not be allowed
to swim for 24hrs after application.
Do not mix flea treatments and certainly do not apply a new treatment
with 7 days of the last treatment. Examine the application site periodically
as very occasionally a sensitive animal, may get a localised mild skin
irritation. If this is the case on your dog bath your dog in a mild non
insecticidal shampoo. If symptoms persist or dog becomes unwell consult
your vet.
When grooming your cat or dog check for fleas.you should be able to see
the adult flea.Even if u can't if u can see flea waste its a sign your
cat or dog has come into contact with fleas .A good way to make sure is
to dampen some cotton wool, rub this against the fur,if you see black dots
this is flea waste.
Note: You will need to use a flea comb if you are using the johnsons 4
fleas after the treatment and use one regularly to check for the presence
of fleas.
Always treat your house if fleas are present on your cat or dog.
To break the flea cycle its not enough just to treat the animal, you must
treat the pets bedding, any soft furnishings and carpets.
If fleas are present wash any pet blankets and pet beds. Regular vacuuming
of carpets and soft furnishings is always helpful. Spray your carpet and
soft furnishings with a suitable household flea spray such as Johnson's
Extra Guard. Always test color fast fabrics, and read the label. Spray
anywhere your cat or dog has been curtains and in all corners and creavices. You
must do this as the same time as treating your animal to break the cycle.DO
NOT USE THE HOUSEHOLD FLEA SPRAY ON YOUR ANIMAL.
Adult fleas spend most of there time on the pet. They lay hundreds of eggs.Whch
fall onto carpets, bedding and upholstery. These eggs develop into larvae, pupae
and then into adult fleas, causing rapid re-infestation of pets especially
during warm weather. Most of the life cycle of the flea takes place in
carpets, furnishings and pet bedding.By spraying with a household flea
treatment you break the life cycle as the larvae and pupae fail to develop. You
can also buy a powder called rug patrol which you sprinkle on your carpets
and vacuum up after 2 hrs.
Precautions when treating your home.
keep the room well ventilated during treatment.
wear gloves.Do not breath in the spray.
REMOVE any small caged animals from room and all caged birds from the
room.
REMOVE cats and dogs from the treated room until finished.
Do not spray near fish tanks and aquariums.
Do not spray on any animal.
Always read the label
